Curtis was born in Yarrawonga, Victoria, Australia she is the daughter of Carmencita Ojales a Filipina from Bolinao Pangasinan and James Ernest Curtis-Smith an Australian lawyer. In 1982, her father married Ojales. The younger sister Jasmine is also an actress. On their father's side they were half-sisters with a name Clare who passed away in 2007 due to a cardiovascular illness at the age of four months.
